The Bust of Thomas Jefferson

The bust of Thomas Jefferson was created by Attilio Piccirilli, who based his work on an original bust sculpted from life by Houdon in 1789, during Jefferson’s tenure as America’s Minister to France. Funding for the Jefferson bust was provided by a group of French admirers led by Chairman Jean Tillier.

In his address, Mr. Davis highlighted Jefferson’s diverse interests and achievements, describing them as evidence of his “far-ranging interest in human affairs.” Davis praised Jefferson as someone who “was always and everywhere a builder,” and concluded that “without the pen of Jefferson,” the American nation “might not have found its soul.”
